Franciscan Friars of the Atonement Announce Speakers for 2007-2008 Paul Wattson Lecture Series

In honor of the upcoming centenary of prayer for Christian unity in January 2008, the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement have invited ecumenical experts to speak on the challenges and future of the ecumenical movement as part of the 2007-08 Paul Wattson Lecture Series, which begins at St. Mary's University in Halifax, Nova Scotia on Monday, November 5, 2007, at 7:30PM with Dr. Paul A. Crow, Jr. All lectures are free and open to the public.

Dr. Crow, Affiliate Professor of Church History and Ecumenical Studies at Christian Theological Seminary, USA and 2007 Tillard Chair Lecturer, University of St. Thomas Aquinas - Angelicum will address “Christian Ecumenism in an Interfaith World.”

On Tuesday, December 18, 2007, at 6 PM Timothy Radcliffe, OP, author of Sing a New Song and What is the point of being a Christian?, former Master of the Order and former Chancellor of the Angelicum University in Rome, will discuss “ The Challenge of Reciting the Creed Today” at the Cento Pro Unione, via Santa Maria dell'Anima, 30, Rome, Italy.

The Very Rev. James F. Puglisi, SA , Minister General of the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement will speak on "The Quest of Christian Unity: The Story of a Vibrant Past With a Bright Future for All Christians" at the University of San Francisco on Monday, February 25, 2008, at 7:30PM on the Main Campus (2500 Golden Gate Ave.) in the McLaren Building, Room 252.

The Paul Wattson Lectures honor the memory of the Rev. Paul James Francis Wattson, S.A. (1863-1940), an early proponent of Christian unity who began the Church Unity Octave – which is regarded as the beginning of the worldwide Week of Prayer for Christian Unity– in 1908 and the founder of the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement, a Roman Catholic religious community that continues to work for Christian Unity and interreligious understanding. Initiated in 1974 at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, lectures are currently held in Canada at St. Mary's University in cooperation with the Atlantic School of Theology in Halifax, Nova Scotia; in the United States at the University of San Francisco in California (since 1980); and in Rome at the friars' ecumenical research center, Centro Pro Unione.
