During the annual Week of Prayer lecture and service in Rome at the Centro Pro Unione, the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement presented the Paul Wattson Christian Unity Award to the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, and the Faith and Order Commission of the World Council of Churches.

Accepting the award were Cardinal Walter Kasper, President of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity and Rev. Dr. John Gibaut, Director of the Faith and Order Commission. Cardinal Kaspar delivered a lecture on The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity - Origin and Continuing Inspiration of the Ecumenical Movement, and Rev. Dr. Gibaut preached at the Ecumenical Celebration of the Word. The Most Rev. John Flack, Director of The Anglican Centre of Rome was the presider.

On January 18th, Friars, Sisters and guests gathered for a prayer service in the Our Lady of the Angels Chapel at Graymoor, where the first Church Unity Octave was held in 1908, to inaugurate the 2008 Week of Paryer for Christian Unity.

Stephen Kendal (Presbyterian), The Rev. Bill Osborn (British Methodist Episcopal), Lietenant-Colonels David & Margaret Hiscock (Salvation Army), and Rev. John Torrance (Baptist).

Michael Scaffidi (center) wrote the winning essay for the sixth annual Friars' Student Writing Award contest co-sponsored by The Catholic Register and the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement. An ecumenical service for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity was held on January 24th at St. Andrew the Apostle in Apex, NC where Franciscan Friars of the Atonement Fr. Thomas Gumprecht and Fr. David Fitzgerald minister. Local Christian churches joined the parish in prayer and song, including the choir from Apex First Baptist Church.
